Malta’s political environment is riddled with partisan politics. We see it in the party-owned media, we see it on social media platforms where people fight all the time over which side is the legitimate heir to the Maltese government throne.
However despite all this, there is a great feeling of political disenchantment in young people. No one wants to talk about politics, no one wants to be active in politics. To some, politics is a taboo. 39% of Maltese aged 16-35 trust no political Party in Malta.
Political disenchantment is natural consequence of a stable democracy. As people have it too good for a long time, they tend to be disinterested with their country’s politics. unless something big happens, such as the recent political scandals that have come out.
This disenchantment can be problematic, as it is why scandals like the ones we hear about happen. If the good people don’t stand up and do something, the bad people will.
What do you think is the main cause of political disenchantment in Malta’s youths?
